Shaza Hamza is a PhD student at the University of Vigo (Spain), investigating the ways in which the viewing experience differs between the viewer who watches a film in its original language and the foreign viewer watching the subtitled/ dubbed version of the same film, in addition to investigating integrated vs standard interlingual subtitles. She holds a BA in English Literature from Damascus University (Syria, 2009), a professional MA in Computer-Aided and Audiovisual Translation (English/Arabic) from the Higher Institute of Translation and Interpreting, Damascus University (2012), and an MA in English and Media from the English and Foreign Languages University (Hyderabad, India, 2016).
Her current doctoral research is mainly based on the notion of extending Media Accessibility to include Audiovisual Translation and the foreign audiences along with SDH, for which she will be making a short documentary and test its reception. Shaza had previously worked as a teaching assistant at the Higher Institute of Translation and Interpreting, Damascus University, where she taught English and Translation (English/Arabic). She has recently worked with Vital Xposure on the subtitling of the award-winning documentary The Knitting Circle.
Shaza has a background in film production, screenplay writing, translation and electronic media, and online language learning. Her research interests also include media accessibility, filmmaking, film studies, reception and eye tracking in AVT (English, Arabic, German), and film criticism.
