Jan-Louis Kruger é xefe do Departamento de Lingüística (Department of Linguistics) na Macquarie University en Sídney (Australia), onde tamén ensina TAV. Os seus principais intereses de investigación inclúen estudos sobre o procesamento da lingua en contextos multimodais; máis en particular, o seu grupo investiga o procesamento cognitivo da lingua, no contexto de textos multimodais nos que o público recibe numerosas fontes de información (a miúdo redundantes ou en conflito), mediante a técnica de seguimento ocular, electroencefalografía e instrumental psicométrico. Forma parte do comité editorial da revista de TAV Journal of Audiovisual Translation (JAT).
Os seus proxectos de investigación en curso analizan, por unha banda, a carga cognitiva no contexto da subtitulación con fins educativos co obxectivo de mellorar os subtítulos para que actúen como apoio para segundas linguas, así como, por outra banda, o procesamento de subtítulos como texto dinámico. É autor de numerosos artigos e capítulos de libro revisados por pares, que tratan dende a audiodescrición ata estudos cognitivos de tradución ou a tradución de narrativa de ficción. Tamén é membro fundador do grupo de investigación Asia-Pacific Translation and Cognition (Tradución e Cognición Asia-Pacífico – APTRAC: https://aptrac.org/).
