Background:

Audiovisual translation is key in enabling viewers to understand and enjoy media products originally produced in a foreign language, with the most frequently used techniques being dubbing and subtitling. In addition, subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing and audiodescription for the blind are used to make audiovisual products accessible to those who face sensory barriers. This is a right recognised in article 30 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. However, research shows that Hollywood productions only invest between 0.1% and 1% of their overall budget in translation and accessibility services. This highlights the marginal position of translation accessibility in the film industry and led to the development of the notion of accessible filmmaking, which advocates for the inclusion of translation and accessibility in the filmmaking process. Accessible filmmaking practices are increasingly being applied in British independent productions, but are yet to take hold in Spain.

Description:

The aim of ITACA is to promote the concept of accessible filmmaking in the Spanish film and media industry. This will be achieved by:

  • analysing the current process of media production in Spain, with a particular focus on accessibility practices, and
  • establishing good practices as well as potential challenges;
  • proposing innovative strategies for including accessibility in the creative process;
  • creating one or several media products based on these new strategies;
  • implementing a reception study of the media products;
  • creating a best practice guide for directors, producers and scriptwriters;
  • promoting the concept of accessible filmmaking and the best practice guide amongst accessibility professionals, TV
  • channels, production and distribution companies and current and future media and translation professionals.
